More than 50 schools from across Hampshire have signed up to contribute artwork to be shown alongside artists and community groups as part of The Winchester Gallery’s partnership with Hampshire County Council’s Climate Unity Project. The gallery will be taken over by hundreds of handmade ‘small worlds’ that celebrate and explore our connections to nature, people and planet.

The Climate Unity project is an educational initiative led by Hampshire County Council to raise awareness and encourage action for climate change, which has been running for over 4 years. This year, The Winchester Gallery has partnered with them to create an ambitious installation, inviting artists, craft makers, schools and community groups to contribute artwork for a large-scale globe installation in the gallery and banner display outside and in the foyer.

Small Worlds is a collective effort to find new ways to come together to make creative voices heard and to encourage people to fall in love with nature and our local green spaces. Alongside the installation, visitors are invited to share views on their favourite nature places and to make more spheres to put on display. Audiences can also explore some of the incredible research that University of Southampton and Winchester School of Art are conducting locally, nationally and globally.

Everyone involved in climate justice can tell you that small actions add up. Here, too, every individual contribution is valued: each artwork has been installed with care and consideration by our gallery team and student volunteers. At the same time, the banners and globes combine to become a bigger collaborative artwork that brings all voices together and creates a visual spectacle that speaks volumes.
