Faculty of Medicine – Inaugural Lecture from Professor Sean Lim: “Immunotherapy: A New Hope”

Immunotherapy has transformed the way we treat patients with cancer. In this lecture to inaugurate her promotion to Professor, Sean Lim will discuss how research in immunotherapy has progressed over the decades, highlighting the key discoveries, discuss the major challenges to research progress and how we might overcome these. She will also reflect on her journey - from Malaysia to the United Kingdom, and from being a medical doctor to a scientist and mother, as well.

About

Biography:

Sean Lim is Professor of Haematology & Translational Immunology at the University of Southampton and Honorary Consultant at University Hospital Southampton. She qualified in medicine from the University of Bristol and clinically trained in medicine and haematology in Cornwall, London, Dorset and Hampshire, obtaining memberships to the Royal College of Physicians and Royal College of Pathologists. She secured a Medical Research Council Research Training Fellowship to pursue a PhD in Cancer Immunology and subsequently, two consecutive Cancer Research UK Clinician Scientist Fellowship Awards, where she undertook two years of postdoctoral research at Stanford University before starting her own research group based at the Centre for Cancer Immunology in Southampton. She was awarded the British Association for Cancer Research Roger Griffin Prize for Cancer Drug Discovery (2018), Royal College of Pathologists Specialty Research Medal (2012) and UK CLL Forum Catovsky Prize (2011) for her research discoveries.

Synopsis of presentation:

Immunotherapy has transformed the way we treat patients with cancer. In this lecture to inaugurate my promotion to Professor, I will discuss how research in immunotherapy has progressed over the decades, highlighting the key discoveries, discuss the major challenges to research progress and how we might overcome these. I will also reflect on my journey – from Malaysia to the United Kingdom, and from being a medical doctor to a scientist and mother, as well.
