This inaugural lecture is a very personal account of what in many ways is a conventional career. In my talk I will acknowledge the people who shaped my career particularly with respect to my interest in medical education. The birth of my son changed my life profoundly. The experience of caring for and bringing up a young person with complex needs has not only had an impact on my personal life but has also shaped me as doctor both generally and specifically with regard to my specialist interest. Much of my talk will focus on undergraduate and post graduate medical training and how we can address the very significant challenges we face

About

Biography – Professor Jane Wilkinson

I am an alumnus of Southampton medical school graduating in 1989. I did my house jobs at Southampton General Hospital in Medicine and Surgery moving into London in 1990 to take up an SHO rotation at the Whittington Hospital for 1 year. I followed this with stints at the Royal Brompton Hospital and the Royal Marsden Hospital. I completed a registrar rotation at the Brook Hospital and Guy’s and returned to Southampton to start a PhD in 1994 in asthma genetics. I had a period of maternity leave in the middle of my PhD programme but submitted my thesis in 1998 before returning to complete my specialist training in respiratory and general internal medicine as a flexible trainee between Southampton and Portsmouth. I was appointed as a consultant in Southampton in 2003. I was appointed as Associate Dean Education in 2020.

Synopsis

This inaugural lecture is a very personal account of what in many ways is a conventional career. I have not achieved anything particularly remarkable in my career, and some of my talk will reflect on how personal circumstances influence one’s professional life. I will reflect on my life and education before I decided to pursue a career in medicine and, in particular, how my humanities background helped me in medicine. Much of my talk will focus on undergraduate and post graduate medical training and how we can address the very significant challenges we face.
