As a world-leading University, our 10-Year Plan is designed to create a great place to study and work, improve the student experience and provide financial sustainability.
An Open Space has been developed to help communicate our 10-Year plan to the University’s community. The space is located on the fourth floor of the Hartley Library in Room 4061.
Teams can immerse themselves in the background data that has driven the formation of the 10-Year Plan. The Open Space is an environment for the individual or small group to learn more about the University strategy, how it is being implemented and about their role in its success.
In the Open Space, the main wall shows the 12 ‘levers’ that span two of our four core principles: Quality and Sustainability. Each ‘lever’ represents an achievable change that will have a significant impact on helping us achieve our objectives. The Open Space challenges staff to suggest ways of resolving the ‘tensions’ that exist between some of the levers, where change in one area can impact another.
In the room there are four touchscreens; the first provides a background to the 10-Year Plan and the second explains each of the 12 levers in detail with videos of Professor William Powrie, Executive Lead for the 10-Year Plan and Dean of Engineering and the Environment, talking through the background data. The third screen shows a selection of best-practice examples from across the University and the last screen shows the organisational governance in place to support the 10-Year Plan.
My team thought the room was a good resource and enjoyed looking at all the information on the walls. The biggest area for discussion for us was around the tensions between the 10-Year Plan objectives and it was good to see those visually on display.

There will be a smaller version of the Open Space travelling to Avenue Campus, The National Oceanography Centre Southampton (NOCS), Winchester School of Art (WSA) and Southampton General Hospital (SGH) during February and March.
The 10-Year Plan Open Space can be booked for team meetings here. You can also ask the reception team at the Hartley Library for the key to the Open Space if you want to stop by on the off chance that the room is free. If you do this, please remember to return the key to reception afterwards.
If you have any questions about the Open Space or the 10-Year Plan, please email Helen Everest, the 10-Year Plan Programme Manager, at 10yrplan@southampton.ac.uk
