The Company’s Director, Sam Hodges, described this as “a wonderful endorsement of all their hard work.”
“From pop-up football stadiums to locking actors in glass cubes, it was a year of trying things out, of adventure, ambition and risk, and to be recognised for it by The Stage is very important to us,” said Sam.
He continued: “This is a pivotal moment for Southampton as it develops a burgeoning Cultural Quarter with the creation of a new arts complex in 2016, and The Nuffield Theatre looks forward to playing an important role in the city’s growth.”
Nuffield beat other regional producing power houses to the prize and was particularly recognised by the judges for the work it has produced over the last year, foremost among them the ambitious Tonight at 8.30. This was a mammoth staging of Noёl Cowardʼs entire cycle of nine one-act plays.
The judges also praised the ingenuity behind the pop-up stage/football pitch hybrid, created to perform Southampton FC drama The Saints, and noted that, while in its 50th year, Nuffield is “undergoing something of a renaissance”.
Nuffield has an exciting season ahead with the world premiere of The Hudsucker Proxy, the first ever stage adaptation of the 1994 Coen brothers’ film, produced in Southampton in May and then transferring to Liverpool.
Nuffield Youth Theatre’s full scale production of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials is in June and the London transfer of the hit production A Number is being staged at the Young Vic over the summer and returning to Nuffield in August.
