This year, almost 250 students applied to be a part of the Ignite programme. The Ignite team conducted around 80 interviews and, thanks to the generosity of donors, they were able to offer 61 students a place on the Ignite programme this year – another record-breaking number.
As with each cohort of Ignite students, this group of first-year students on the programme will receive a range of financial support over three years study, plus pastoral and social support. In addition, first-year students will undertake a paid internship in Spring 2025; a transformative and positive experience which encourages students to consider previously unknown careers.
In October, new and returning Ignite students were invited to attend the annual Ignite Welcome Breakfast, an important event in the calendar. The Welcome Breakfast introduces new students to the Ignite programme and the team that runs it.
During the event, the students heard about the activities and support that they will be offered over the year and they had the opportunity to ask questions about the programme. Most importantly, the Welcome Breakfast offered the students a chance to connect with their fellow Ignite peers. You may remember from your own time at university, or starting a new job, how daunting it can be to try to meet new people. Each year, the Welcome Breakfast gives the students a chance to chat in an informal setting while enjoying a pastry (or two!).
During the Breakfast, the students were also told about how the programme is fully funded by donations from alumni, businesses and the local community. One first year student was clearly very emotional about being selected to be on the Ignite programme. Her journey to Southampton was not smooth, and she shared that being chosen has already had such a positive impact on her. She is excited about the opportunities that lie ahead of her, and she is relieved that she can fully commit to her studies without the need to work excessive hours.
The new cohort will become a part of the Southampton community over the coming months, investing in their education and exploring new opportunities and interests. We look forward to keeping you updated on how the new and continuing Ignite students get on, to show you the difference you are making. Thank you for your continued commitment to these bright and talented students.
