Over 1,300 staff and students attended the event on Tuesday 22 November, which saw the lights switched on by President and Vice-Chancellor Sir Christopher Snowden, alongside Tom Deacon and Emma Real-Davies from Capital FM’s South Coast breakfast show.
Emma is an alumna of the University, having studied English Literature here from 2011 to 2014. During her time in Southampton she was also an active member of Surge Radio, winning a national Student Radio Award in 2013 for Best Female Presenter.
Before the lights were switched on, the crowd had the opportunity to browse the Christmas market for food and gifts while enjoying Christmas carols performed by the University’s brass band.

The University’s popular family Christmas event is fast approaching on Monday 12 December.
Staff are encouraged to bring their children to take part in the festive activities on offer, which will run from 16:00 – 18:00. Children can visit Santa’s grotto, have their faces painted, and watch performances from our children’s entertainer.
The afternoon will finish with a fantastic 10-minute firework display which can be seen from the designated viewing area between the Turner Sims and the Staff Club.
