The University of Southampton has been highlighted for playing a key role in a number of initiatives which have enhanced the South of England’s reputation as being the backbone of the UK’s digital economy.
A new government-sponsored Science and Innovation Audit (SIA), found that Innovation South, which covers eight counties across southern England, has a total economic output of £225.3 billion, accounting for nearly 14 per cent of the UK’s economic output.
Stretching from Dorset to Kent and from Berkshire to the Isle of Wight, Innovation South is one of eight science and innovation audits across the UK.
The report, released by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, illustrates the many ways in which the region is at the forefront of digital innovation.
Professor Peter Smith, a member of the Innovation South Strategic Steering Group and Director of the University’s Institute for Life Sciences, said:
The University has played a key role in formulating the Innovation South Consortium’s submission to the UK industrial strategy. The University is playing a major role in advancing the societal impact of research and education programmes.

- Discoveries in photonics developed by the University-based Optoelectronics Research Centre
- The University’s status as an Academic Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Research
- Establishing the cross-disciplinary Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute
- The University’s role co-development of Boldrewood Innovation Campus with Lloyd’s Register
