BBC North America Editor and University Pro-Chancellor, Jon Sopel (BSc Politics and Sociology, 1981), returned to campus in March to deliver a lecture as part of the 2017 Distinguished Lectures programme to a sold-out audience.
Jon, who has enjoyed a distinguished career with the BBC, offered a fascinating insight into his role as a journalist covering the recent US Presidential election.
Among other things, Jon discussed how the prevalence of ‘fake news’ in the run up to the election, combined with President Trump’s stance on traditionally trusted media institutions (such as the BBC), could potentially affect the future creation and consumption of news in America and the wider world.
The lecture, which drew crowds of over 400 to Highfield Campus, was live-streamed, across the world to the University of Southampton Alumni Community.
